| | A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF MIDDELVLEI’S MOST ARDENT SUPPORTERS |
|
1942 - 2009 |
Philé Momberg, the wife of Stiljan and mother of Annatjie, Tinnie, Ben, Tinkie and Jan passed away on the 17th of August 2009 after a brief illness. She was one of Middelvlei’s most loyal supporters who in her own, quiet way made a huge contribution to the development of our estate.
Wine was an integral part of Philé’s lifestyle. Not a day went by without her enjoying a glass of Middelvlei. Her favourite was the Pinotage Merlot blend and she had clearly defined ideas about each vintage.
With the release of each new wine she would say to her winemaker son, Tinnie, that it doesn’t quite live up to the previous one – only to repeat her words when tasting the next vintage! We’ll never open a bottle of Middelvlei Pinotage Merlot without thinking of Philé. Please join us in raising a glass to a very special lady.

| TWO IRRESISTIBLE NEW RELEASES |
Boasting a trendy screw-cap, our recently released Chardonnay 2009 is unwooded, delightfully fruity, crisp and low in alcohol. A super accompaniment to a variety of dishes and equally memorable on its own. Good news for Pinotage lovers is that the Middelvlei Pinotage 2008 will be released within the next few weeks. For the past couple of vintages this wine has been made exclusively from free-run juice and our 2008 vintage will carry a back label explaining this concept: “Middelvlei Pinotage is made from free-run juice, a term used for wine that was made from juice that naturally drained off from freshly crushed grapes. This results in an elegant wine with ample natural fruit and soft gentle tannins.” |

VINTAGE REPORTS |
No matter how dedicated our vineyard team and how committed our cellar team, Mother Nature always has the last say. We are therefore pleased to report that the slow ripening conditions that boded so well for our 2009 vintage have indeed yielded beautifully balanced grapes, which in turn resulted in generously fruity, elegant wines. At the time of writing, our 2009 reds are still resting in the barrels, where they will gain in complexity and finesse over the next few months.
What about the 2010 vintage? Tinnie is optimistic. “The winter temperatures were low enough to allow for ideal vineyard hibernation and the building of reserves.” However, to those who think that the Cape has had enough rain for one season, we have bad news. Until now we’ve only had 500 mm of the long-term average of 700 mm – we therefore look forward to more!

HAPPINESS IS A CLOSE-KNIT, CREATIVE COMMUNITY |
On our beautiful estate there is always something to celebrate. Thus Heritage Day was observed with an Open Day where friends of Middelvlei could share in our social activities.
Guests were welcomed by the joyous sounds of our children’s voices, there was an impressive performance by our own promising keyboard players and a colourful arts and crafts exhibition showcased the talents of the community.
Among the festivities was also a ‘graduation’ ceremony where the teenagers who completed the alcohol and drugs awareness programme sponsored by Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA) received their certificates.
We wish to express our appreciation to all who contribute so generously towards the wellbeing of the Middelvlei community. As was evident in the exhibitions, all materials donated are being put to good use.
Thank you! |
